Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Plumber or Heating Engineer

What information should you provide?

Describe symptoms rather than opening an appliance or attempting a technical diagnosis. If there is an immediate gas safety concern, use the appropriate emergency guidance rather than waiting for an ordinary directory enquiry.

• Whether the work is a fault, planned replacement or new installation.
• The appliance, system or rooms affected and any visible model information.
• What happens, when it happens and any error code already displayed.
• Previous work or recurring faults you know about.
• Access constraints and whether water or heating can be isolated.

Does the work involve gas?

Gas work must be carried out by an appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the individual engineer and the work categories shown on their Gas Safe ID card; company registration alone does not show that every engineer is qualified for every appliance category.

What solution is being proposed?

Where businesses recommend different solutions, compare the intended outcome, limitations, controls and future maintenance rather than model names alone.

• What investigation is included before parts or replacement work are authorised?
• Which parts, controls, pipework alterations and making good are included?
• Will another trade be required for electrics, joinery, tiling or decoration?
• What assumptions could change the price after access or testing?
• Who removes old equipment and packaging?

Are approval, testing or certificates relevant?

GOV.UK lists installing or replacing a heating system among alterations that may need Building Regulations approval. Ask how the proposed work will comply and what notification or completion record you should receive.

Requirements depend on the exact work. Check official guidance rather than assuming that all plumbing jobs follow the same process.

Before accepting the proposal

1. Confirm whether the figure is a quote or estimate and what could change it.
2. Verify Gas Safe registration and relevant work categories if gas work is involved.
3. Record the parts, controls, testing, making good and disposal included.
4. Agree access, isolation, timing and payment arrangements.
5. Ask what instructions, certificates, notifications, warranties or commissioning records will be handed over.
